About us

Midsummer Energy was started in 2005 by Dr Andrew Rankin. Previously working as a climate scientist for BAS, he dreamed of saving the solar panel at a time!

In the beginning...

The initial business was predominantly providing off grid equipment such as solar panels for narrow boats and caravans, in fact if you just walk along the River Cam you will see a full range of our products!

In 2010 the government introduced the 'Feed-in-tariff', a subsidy for anyone who had solar panels installed on their property, for feeding their surplus energy into the grid. Already an expert in the solar business, Midsummer Energy became accredited MCS installers and started installing solar panels. Since then there have been several changes to the subsidies. After the 2016 drop in subsidies, Midsummer stopped installing new systems on people's homes. We continue to support our existing customers. We also sell off grid systems and wholesale solar equipment. We therefore have good relationships with other installers in Cambridge and are happy to help with new enquiries.

One thing we pride ourselves on at Midsummer is, that unlike some solar installers, we have been working in the solar industry for many years now and we have the knowledge to help you find the best solution for your property. Please contact us.

Ethics too!...

In the Midsummer warehouse and office we reuse any materials that come in that we can, from building shelves out of pallets or repackaging products. Anything left we recycle.

And when one of our team come to give you a quote, whenever possible we will always cycle to your appointment.

If you would like to know more about us or you have any questions, please feel free to call for a chat!

Meet the team

Andy set up the company in 2005 and has been running Midsummer ever since.

Tom can help with any questions you have about your existing system.

We do a lot of work with off grid systems - Mike is the chap to talk to about these.

We use our experience of installing solar PV by selling to other installers throughout the UK. Jamie is head of our wholesale team. Any questions about the products we supply, he's the person to ask.

Jim is in charge of our marketing, and keeps the Midsummer Wholesale website up to date.

Oscar is our software developer and has designed some tools to make our jobs much easier. He is currently working on a tool to allow installers to design all aspects of a PV system - you can have a play yourself HERE.

Our installation service

We make a grid-connected system easy!

If you're reading this, you've probably decided that it would be good to have a grid-connected PV system installed on your house. But you still have questions. Is my building really suitable? What options are there? What kind of costs are involved?

Well, don't worry, because we make it all very simple! Please note that we are no longer installing systems ourselves, though we are more than happy to help you.

... Just email us or just give us a bell for a chat. We can quickly give you some basic advice: how practical it is likely to be in your case; what the financial outlay is likely to be and also what the returns are likely to be. We just need a few details about your house.

... we'll be happy to help you find a grid-connect adviser to come to your house and get the measurements necessary to give you a free, no obligation quote and answer any questions you might still have.

... if you do decide to take it further, your installation company will book in a date to install the system! The main components of the system (the panels and the inverter)have a five to ten year guarantee dependent on what options you choose, and a five year no-quibble guarantee on the workmanship, so you can rest assured that in the unlikely event of any problems they will soon be resolved. But don't worry, all the component parts have a significantly longer warranty on them!

The installation is likely to take a day or two. The installers will need to do some roofing work to ensure the panel mounting frames are securely attached to your roof in a weatherproof manner. There will then be some electrical work in bringing the cables from the solar panels to the inverter, and from the inverter to the mains distribution board in your house.

Once it is installed - that's it! The system will immediately start generating power as soon as the sun is out. Payments to you under the scheme are handled by your electricity supply company - so future electricity bills should be accompanied by a cheque!
